The hydraulic pump is an integral part of every hydraulic transmission system. The hydraulic pump is responsible for converting mechanical energy into hydraulic energy. The process is facilitated by the pump inputting force in a manner that generates a flow of hydraulic fluid. It is the pressure in the hydraulic fluid that promotes the transfer from mechanical energy to hydraulic pressure.

The most basic type of   Hydraulic Pumps     is a manual pump. These are ideal for any situation that requires low power applications and the prime mover is too expensive or unavailable. Manual pumps can be used as the main source of power, such as hydraulic power tools or desktop hydraulic presses. The manual pump can also be used as an auxiliary power supply. This may include functions such as releasing the hydraulic brake on the tractor trailer. The power input of the hand pump is very low. Most people can only enter one-tenth of a horsepower, at most a few seconds. Because of this low power, most manual pumps are very slow and can reach about 10,000 psi.

The input of a typical hydraulic pump is driven by an internal combustion engine (gasoline pump). The other pumps are driven by electric motors. Generally, an internal combustion engine or an electric motor inputs mechanical energy into a hydraulic pump through one or more rotors. The mechanical energy will provide power to the rotor, which will rotate in the pump and transfer the mechanical energy to the hydraulic oil. When the reaction force applied to the hydraulic fluid is high enough, it will cause the flow to be equal to the displacement of the pump. This process will also be affected by the rotor speed.

Hydraulic pumps are widely used, and these pumps are installed in almost all mobile or industrial hydraulic machinery. Mobile machinery often uses hydraulic pumps more frequently than industrial machinery. This is so because electric actuators are rarely used in mobile machinery. Hydraulic pumps are also often found on forestry equipment, mining machinery, excavators, dump trucks, cranes, graders, loaders, vacuum trucks, tractors and many other types of machinery.

The use of hydraulic pumps in industrial environments is still very common. Generally speaking, in severe applications, hydraulic pumps are used more frequently. Hydraulic pumps are most commonly found in steel mills, foundries, elevators, conveyors, injection molding machines, shearing and punching machines, mixers, forklifts, pallet jacks, etc.
