With all the talk of console exclusives between Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, the one exclusive that gets overlooked the most is the MLB The Show series. Yes, it is a sports series, but it’s also the best representation of a sport in video game form. This also means it becomes more difficult on a yearly basis to improve on what has already been established. With MLB The Show 19, San Diego Studios has thought outside of the box in terms of keeping its players engaged. New modes and new ways of playing have been implemented this year along with implementing community feedback for what happens on the field. The results point to The Show 19 as being the purest form in the series to date.

This year we’re treated to some mild but noticeable visual upgrades. Some characters look a bit more like their real life counterparts than previous years, and although not every player is a perfect recreation, the vast majority could be easily identified even without their jersey. The fields look as beautiful as ever, players have received a noteworthy increase in animations, and the lighting has seen a moderate upgrade to help the graphics feel a bit crisper. The Show has always been exceptionally pretty even on older hardware, but this year really knocks it out of the park. Right off the bat, the presentation and graphical capabilities of The Show are second to none. It's easy to get sucked into a game of The Show 19 and forget that these aren't live-action players but computer generated models. From top to bottom MLB The Show 19 oozes charisma and polish. All the players move fluidly and realistically. This even includes their facial expressions as players will emote elation when hitting a home run and bitter disappointment when striking out on swings. MLB The Show 19 can't quite get over the problem of commentators making player names sound canned and stilted but everything else in the commentary track is stellar. Matt Vasgersian, Mark DeRosa, and Dan Plesac all sound like they're reacting to a real game playing out in front of them and not just spouting the same recorded lines with no gameplay basis.

Perhaps the only disappointment, then, will come for fans of Franchise mode, which has largely been untouched this time out. While it remains as comprehensive as ever, the only real underlying improvement has been applied to contract and financial structuring, which is unlikely to particularly appeal to anyone but the most hardcore of players. There’s also no online option, which has been a point of contention for a couple of seasons already.
