MONTECOPIOLO, Italy -- A final push from Diego Ulissi saw the Italian win a tough eighth stage as the Giro dItalia took to the mountains on Saturday, while Cadel Evans ended Michael Matthews grip on the overall lead. DeAndre Jordan Jersey . Ulissi made his move inside the final 300 metres, bursting out of the peloton to edge Robert Kiserlovski for a second stage win in the race. Wilco Kelderman was third on the 179-kilometre (111-mile) leg from Foligno to Montecopiolo, which had two category one climbs, including the final ascent to the finish. "It was a difficult race today, it was really too hard for my characteristics, but of course I am really happy," Ulissi said. Evans finished fifth to take the lead from fellow Australian Matthews, who had worn the pink jersey for six days. Evans has a 57-second advantage over Rigoberto Uran, with Rafal Majka third. "We had hopes of what we could do," Evans said. "Its been a really difficult Giro for all sorts of reasons. We are in a good position at the moment. It was a hard stage with all the contenders there ... We still have huge mountains to go and the gaps there will be even more than today." This years Giro honours the 10th anniversary of Marco Pantanis death, and the eighth stage was one of three dedicated to him. There were many posters of Pantani along the route and a huge cutout of the Italian cyclist on the Carpegna climb, where he used to train. Pantani won the Giro and Tour de France in 1998. He was found dead in a hotel room on Valentines Day in 2004, and a coroner ruled he died from cocaine poisoning. Julian Arredondo led the race for most of the day as part of an early break of 10 riders who managed to build a lead of more than eight minutes. That advantage diminished on the approach to the first climb. With an average gradient of 9.9 per cent, and 14 per cent at its steepest, the Carpegna was the first serious challenge of this years Giro. Arredondo jumped on the ascent with 36.6 kilometres (22.7 miles) remaining and had a 36-second advantage over Stefano Pirazzi at the summit, with a greatly reduced peloton crossing 1 minute, 57 seconds later. Pierre Rolland attacked off the group on the descent but Arredondo still had an advantage of 1:10 over him at the start of the penultimate climb, with the peloton trailing by 2:40. Arredondo faded two kilometres from the finish, and Rolland continued on solo before being swept up by the peloton with 350 metres to go. Daniel Moreno jumped but he was passed by Kiserlovksi, who looked to take victory until Ulissis attack from nowhere. Sundays ninth stage is a 172km leg from Lugo to Sestola, which ends in a category 2 climb to the finish. Sam Dekker Jersey . Viewers in the Canadiens region can watch the game on TSN Habs at 7:30pm et/8:30pm at. Chris Paul Jersey . At a news conference Tuesday where it was thought that the fiery Schallibaum may be shown the door after a dismal finish to the Major League Soccer season, team president Joey Saputo said no decision has been made on whether the Swiss Volcano will be back in 2014.It certainly hasnt been a December to remember for the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. These provincial rivals have been the Western Conferences worst teams this month heading into Saturday nights matchup in Calgary in this seasons second Battle of Alberta. Edmonton (7-21-7) has produced a league-worst five points this month, with Calgary totaling two more to match Carolinas 3-7-1 record in December as second-worst. The Oilers are enduring an 0-6-2 slide that isnt even as bad as their 0-7-4 winless run Nov. 11-Dec. 3. They have one victory in their last 20 games, and the leagues worst team was eager for a three-day break between games over the holidays. This season, I couldnt imagine a worse start to a year than we have, winger Taylor Hall said. But it will be a new year and I think this break will do nothing but good for our team. Calgary (18-15-3) would be mired with the same number of December points as its rivals to the north if not for Mondays 4-3 overtime win at Los Angeles that ended a 0-7-1 slide. The Flames seemed headed for another listless defeat as they trailed by three goals before rallying as rookie Johnny Gaudreau scored twice in the final 2:12 of regulation before Mark Giordanos winning goal. Giordano increased his team-high point total to 34 to lead all NHL defensemen. Nothing impresses me anymore about Mark Giordano, coach Bob Hartley said. Its consistency, all the time, (he) always shows up. The coach said that the Flames are using Mondays effort as the start of a new season, with this contest beginning a six-game homestand. Were back in front of our fans against the Oilers, game two of our seven-game segment and thats how we prepare, Hartley said. Theres no sense dwelling onn the losses. Brice Johnson Jersey. . The Flames seek to avoid extending their home slide to four - their longest since losing seven in a row Dec. 27, 2013-Jan. 16, 2014. Being at home may not be good since the visiting team has taken the last eight meetings in this series. The Flames won 5-2 at Edmonton on Oct. 9 behind a hat trick from Mason Raymond, who has two goals in 16 games since. The Oilers visit Calgary twice in the next five days after another dismal performance in Tuesdays 5-1 defeat to similarly lowly Arizona. Ben Scrivens allowed two goals on three shots in the first 5 minutes before he was pulled for Viktor Fasth. We obviously took a step back tonight, interim coach Todd Nelson said. It wasnt the game that we wanted. I thought that our execution was pretty poor. Nelson is 0-2-2 since replacing the fired Dallas Eakins on Dec. 15. Edmonton owns the NHLs fifth-worst attack with 2.14 goals per game and the leagues worst defense, yielding an average of 3.40 goals. The Oilers are last in the league on the power play on the road at 5.3 percent, coming up empty in 21 straight chances. Edmonton enters on a 0-5-4 road slide - its worst since going 0-8-2 from March 2-April 3, 2010.
