PHOENIX -- Randall Delgado tried almost too hard to make Arizonas rotation in spring training, tossing out mechanics as he overthrew. Cheap Air Max 2017 . A stint in the minors did wonders for the young right-hander, giving him the strike-throwing foundation thats allowed him to pitch so well since being called up. Pounding the strike zone with his fastball and getting San Diegos hitters to chase his changeup, Delgado tossed a three-hitter for his first career shutout and the Diamondbacks pounded out 17 hits in a 10-0 rout over the Padres on Friday night. "This is what hes been building up toward," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. The Diamondbacks gave Delgado plenty of support, roughing up Eric Stults (8-9) with six runs the first three innings and seven extra-base hits. Aaron Hill had a pair of run-scoring doubles before leaving with a tight right hamstring, A.J. Pollock added a two-run single and Martin Prado had two of Arizonas six doubles. Delgado (3-3) helped himself by adding a pair of singles, becoming the first Arizona pitcher with a shutout and a multihit game since Randy Johnson on Sept. 14, 2003, against Colorado. "I thought he pitched really well tonight," Padres third baseman Chase Headley said. "They beat us in every aspect tonight and sometimes that happens." One of the top pitching prospects in baseball, Delgado arrived in Arizona with Prado last year in a six-player deal that sent outfielder Justin Upton and infielder Chris Johnson to Atlanta. Delgado failed to make Arizonas rotation out of spring training and opened the season at Triple-A Reno, where he worked on his mechanics and his strike-throwing mentality. Since being called up in June, the 23-year-old Panamanian has been a solid addition to Arizonas staff, allowed three earned runs in all eight starts. Delgado worked 5 2-3 scoreless innings his last start, a 3-1 win over San Francisco, and was even better against the Padres. Everth Cabrera lined his first pitch of the game for a single, but the right-hander retired nine straight until Nick Hundleys leadoff double in the fourth. Delgado stranded him at second and retired 10 straight before walking Yonder Alonso with one out in the seventh. Right fielder Gerardo Parra made a spectacular catch against the fence to rob Will Venable of a hit to end the seventh and shortstop Didi Gregorious made a diving grab for the games final out, helping Delgado extend his scoreless streak to 14 2-3 innings. Delgado struck out three, walked one and threw 70 strikes in 100 pitches for his first complete game in the majors. "This is a key for the pitchers, throw a lot of strikes, try to be ahead in the count," Delgado said. "That helped so much today. I was just trying to keep the ball down, throw a strike and see what happens after that." Stults pitched well his previous three starts, allowing five earned runs in 21 innings, and tossed a two-hit shutout his last start against Arizona on June 14. The Diamondbacks roughed up the left-hander right away Friday. Hill drove in a run with a double in the first inning, then scored on Prados run-scoring single. In the second inning, Cliff Pennington scored from first when Hundley, San Diegos catcher, threw wildly to first on Delgados sacrifice bunt and Hill followed with a second RBI double before leaving for precautionary reasons. The Diamondbacks scored two runs again in the third inning, on Wil Nieves run-scoring through a drawn-in infield and an RBI double by Pennington that made it 6-0. Ross added a run-scoring single in the fourth inning off Stults, who allowed seven runs -- five earned -- on 11 hits and struck out five. "I didnt give us a chance to win from the start," said Stults, winless his last five road starts. "The first inning to give them the two runs, then in the second inning to not come out and give us a shut-down inning, that was tough." Ross led off the seventh inning by hitting Colt Hynes up-in-the-zone 0-2 pitch off the foul pole in left for his sixth homer and Pollock made it 10-0 with his two-run single. By then, Delgado was already rolling to his best outing in the majors. NOTES: Arizona C Miguel Montero missed his fourth straight game with a stiff back and is still day to day. ... Alonzo went 0 for 3 to end an 11-game hitting streak at Chase Field, second-longest by a Padres player at Arizonas home field. ... I thought we started fast. Defense did an incredible job. They were completely dominant. The Jayhawks, (1-2) struggled offensively throughout, although they managed 314 yards of total offense. Any momentum, though, was thwarted by the Jayhawks four fumbles and two interceptions in the game.A key swing came when Memphis reached the Kansas 13 in the closing minutes of the half. A sack and a tackle for loss, plus a couple of penalties put Memphis near midfield. Then Memphis muffed the punt attempt, giving Kansas the ball at the Tiger 38 trailing 26-7.On the first Kansas play, Memphis defensive tackle Jonathan Wilson intercepted the ball and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown and Memphis carried a 33-7 lead at the break. It shocked me big time, the soft-spoken Wilson said of the play, adding he didnt see any Jayhawks in front of him after he picked off the pass from Kansas quarterback Montell Cozart.
