DENVER -- A dazzling defense rendered the Denver Broncos quarterback question a moot point last year. Eric Dickerson Jersey . The Super Bowl champs are counting on that being the case again this season. The six-month saga over who will guide Denvers title defense came down to Mark Sanchez losing his grip on both the ball and the job when he fumbled twice inside the San Francisco 15-yard line on Aug. 20. Rookie Paxton Lynch might be the franchises future, but the present belongs to Trevor Siemian. The seventh-round pick out of Northwestern in 2015 has made the startling jump from No. 3 QB to starter thanks to a confluence of events, including a retirement, a rebuff and a reboot. While Lynch was showing more promise than proficiency, Siemian displayed poise, power and precision.Thats not surprising given that Siemian had a birds-eye view of the Broncos quarterback conundrum last year when coach Gary Kubiak began every Monday meeting after mid-November with an announcement whether Peyton Manning or Brock Osweiler would start. The Broncos made it work thanks to a spectacular supporting cast that also makes them the favorite to win their sixth straight AFC West crown, although Oakland and Kansas City are closing that gap.The Raiders and Chiefs both beat the Broncos in Denver last year, and it took Mannings Willis Reed moment to keep the San Diego Chargers from doing the same.Manning retired a month after Denvers parade and Osweiler bolted 48 hours later to the Houston Texans. GM John Elway was rebuffed in his attempt to get Colin Kaepernick, so it came down to a three-way QB competition. Now, the Broncos go into the NFL kickoff game against Carolina on Sept. 8 with two quarterbacks who have never thrown a pass that counts in the NFL.Thats not exactly a recipe for another run, but the Broncos always seem to navigate their way through adversity.DOMINANT DENVER: The Broncos lost DE Malik Jackson and MLB Danny Trevathan to free agency, not really lamentable departures. Theyve had injury issues along the line, but theyre still loaded with pass rushers Von Miller, DeMarcus Ware, Shane Ray and Shaq Barrett, plus MLB Brandon Marshall and DBs Chris Harris Jr., Bradley Roby, Aqib Talib, Kayvon Webster, T.J. Ward and Darrian Stewart.Miller parlayed his Super Bowl MVP performance into a jet-lagged offseason that included 61 flights and 47 television appearances. Oh, and a record six-year, $114.5 million deal with $70 million in guarantees. Hes looked terrific in limited action this summer. The retooled offense features four new starters on the line, a bona fide fullback and a new tight end group. Denver has co-stars at wide receiver in Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas, who is bent on putting last years drops and drama behind him.RISING RAIDERS: The future of the team in Oakland remains as foggy as an autumn morning in the Bay Area. Still, the Raiders have legitimate hopes of contending for the playoffs for the first time in years. They rebuilt the defense, signing CB Sean Smith, LB Bruce Irvin and S Reggie Nelson, drafting S Karl Joseph and DL Jihad Ward. Those five team with All-Pro Khalil Mack on what should be a much-improved unit.Offense all comes down to whether Derek Carr takes another step forward. After playing very well in the first half last season, Carr struggled in the second half, in part because of injuries to WR Amari Cooper and C Rodney Hudson. Oakland hopes signing G Kelechi Osemele fortifies the line and leads to a more consistent running game.CHAMPING CHIEFS: Kansas City LB Justin Houston is out for now after surgery to repair a non-functioning ACL in February. The Chiefs also took a cautious approach with LB Tamba Hali after surgery on his balky knees, and RB Jamaal Charles, who had his right ACL repaired last season. With injury issues a concern, the Chiefs also feel they have more talent across the board than at any point under GM John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid. Charles and RBs Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware form a potent three-headed monster, and Jeremy Maclin and TE Travis Kelce give Alex Smith decent pass catchers. The defense was great last season but is a year older, with concerns about the pass rush and in the secondary, where SS Eric Berry didnt report until Sunday.RECHARGED CHARGERS: Joey Bosa went public with his contract dispute. While the front office ripped Bosa, coach Mike McCoy seemed to support the former Ohio State defensive end selected third overall in the draft. He said whenever Bosa shows up, he is one of us. Bosa finally signed on Monday. The Chargers, 4-12 last season, missed the playoffs for the fifth time in six years, and could really use Bosa at full strength. Their D-line lost Sean Lissemore to a season-ending shoulder injury in training camp and Damion Square to a four-game suspension to start the season. On offense, Melvin Gordon is trying to bounce back from his nightmarish season.PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH: Broncos, Raiders, Chiefs, Chargers.---AP Sports Writers Dave Skretta, Josh Dubow and Bernie Wilson contributed.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL---Follow AP Pro Football Writer Arnie Melendrez Stapleton on Twitter: http://twitter.com/arniestapleton Eric Dickerson Youth Jersey . R.J. Umberger scored twice to lead the Blue Jackets to a franchise-record for consecutive wins with a 5-3 victory Tuesday night over the Los Angeles Kings. No. 13-seeded John Isner and No. 21 Philipp Kohlschreiber were among six players who dropped out of the tournament on Tuesday, joining No. 12 seed Tommy Haas and two other players who withdrew on Monday.Eddie Jones transforms England, one-dimensional Wales, and France a complete mess: Dewi Morris reviews the 2016 Six Nations... EnglandFive played and five won - you cannot ask for more than that, can you? The 2016 Six Nations may not have been a classic and I think all the teams were suffering from a bit of a World Cup hangover. But that does not take away from Englands Grand Slam efforts. Will Greenwood discusses Englands first Six Nations Grand Slam in 13 years With a few tweaks here and there, Eddie Jones has turned Englands fortunes around. They have a very competitive scrum and their lineout was superb. We saw Maro Itoje come to the fore and had glimpses of the future with Elliot Daly, too. George Kruis was superb as well and I think Dylan Hartley was an excellent captain.England head to Australia in the summer with a spring in their step. It wont be easy but with a few more tweaks here and there, England could well surprise the Wallabies.Wales Wales must play more attacking rugby in New Zealand, says Dewi Wales really need to adapt their game plan. I know they have been talking a lot about it but it just has not happened for them.I think it is a real shame that they have played in such a one-dimensional way given the quality of backs they have. My old nemesis Robert Jones says that something has to change because they are wasting so much talent out in the backs. Wales are off to New Zealand and if they go there with their Six Nations attitude they will be stopped and squashed. Dewi Morris Whether that is changing Rhys Priestland for Dan Biggar to play a more attacking game rather than a kicking game remains to be seen.Wales are off to New Zealand and if they go there with their Six Nations attitude they will be stopped and squashed. They are going to have to play some more exciting rugby.Wales have plenty of capabilities and they have the firepower but they just cant seem to bring it all together.Ireland CJ Stander has made an impressive start to his international career Ireland showed against Scotland what a good structure they have and what a good attacking side they are. They have had a few blips but Joe Schmidt is a very, very good coach and I still think he can get a lot more out of Ireland. We have seen some excellent players come to the fore like Jack McGrath and CJ Stander, who I thought was superb this tournament. The more they play the better they will grow.Ireland have a long injury list including Peter OMahony, Sean OBrien and Iain Henderson. Once they return there will be the depth and potential to grow this team.Scotland Stuart Hogg is world cllass, says Dewi They have individual talent but there is a real lack of collective togetherness. Jack Youngblood Youth Jersey. They seem to be able to win more than their fair share of the ball but cant seem to make it count.Scotland showed some really great aspects to their game - they have a tremendous back row and I thought John Hardie really stuck his hand up.The Gray brothers were outstanding too and Stuart Hogg is one of those players who you just love to watch with ball in hand. There is not that many world class players in the northern hemisphere but Hogg is one of them. Six Nations review Englands Grand Slam success only the start, says Stuart Barnes Scotland also have two very good props in WP Nel and Alasdair Dickinson. They are off to Japan in the summer and I think that is a good tour for them to build some confidence. This is a squad that needs to get more time under their belt.Vern Cotter is an excellent coach and the more time he spends with them the better they will get.France Guy Noves has endured a difficult start to his reign as France head coach There is so much talent in France but they are in pieces at the moment. They played more rugby in the first half against England than they did all tournament.I love the Top 14 but it is killing French rugby. The clubs have more power than the federation and the players are getting flogged. You cant start a season in mid-August and finish it in mid-June and try to get your international players ready for Test matches.Asking if Guy Noves is the right or wrong man for the job is immaterial because no matter who takes over, the problem is the same - their hands are tied. A number of France internationals will be unavailable for their June tour of Argentina due to club commitments France need the clubs to give their international players time off and time together so that they can properly prepare for the Six Nations and tours. This seasons Top 14 final is on June 24 - France will already be on tour in Argentina with the first Test being played on June 18 and the second on June 25. Its a complete mess!Everyone loves to stick the knife into Rob Andrew but he was the main instigator in getting the RFU and the Premiership clubs to sit down and settle the dispute between club and country. England now have more time than ever with their players and you can see the result of that.Italy Sergio Parisse was again outstanding for Italy during a dire Six Nations campaign If Conor OShea is taking over then he has a heck of a job to do. I think if one person can do it then it is him. This campaign has been really difficult for them and they have suffered from a lot of injuries which has certainly hindered them. There has been a lot of talk about Italy deserving their place in the Six Nations, especially with the likes of Georgia and Romania improving on a yearly basis and desperate for a regular shot at the big boys.I think Italy need an injection of new coaching ideas and some new talent - they certainly do have some wonderful players but they lack depth.Sergio Parisse once again has been wonderful for them but how long can he keep going? I think the next few years will be crucial for their development.Do you agree with Dewi? Have your say by giving us your comments below if viewing on skysports.com.
