RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The nine-day fencing competitions at the Rio Olympics concluded on Sunday with European fencers sweeping nine out of the 10 golds on offer to display their dominance again in the sport.
Italy was the leader for the last three Olympic Games, however, it's time for Russia to be the biggest winner.
Russia, who did not win a single gold at London Olympics, collected four gold medals from the women's foil individual (Inna Deriglazova), women's sabre individual (Yana Egorian), men's foil team and women's sabre team. Only France in 1900 (5) and Italy in 1920 (5) have ever collected more fencing golds than Russia in a single edition of the Olympic Games.
Deriglazova, the world No. 2, made the history as the first Russian fencer to win the women's individual foil.
Prior to the Rio Olympic Games, Russia already stole the limelight by leading the medal table both in 2015 World Fencing Championships and 2016 European Fencing Championships.
Hungary took the second place with two golds, one silver and one bronze. Aron Szilagyi joined four-men club winning back-to-back gold medals in the men's sabre individual and Veteran Emese Szasz handed Hungary the first Rio Olympic Games gold medal in women's epee individual.
Italy fencers advanced into four competitions finals but only Daniele Garozzo, who never be a champion in the senior level, claimed the gold medal in men's foil individual. Italy finished third on the medal list, the last time for them to collect only one gold medal in fencing was in 1988.
Frace ended its gold medal drought since Beijing 2008 by clinching gold in the men's epee team. The 'les Bleus' won three consecutive titles to set a record ninth Olympic title in the event.
London Olympic Games witnessed Asia emerge as a new fencing powerhouse with China and South Korea winning two gold medals respectively. But in Rio, China collected only one sliver and one bronze while South Korea just bagged one gold from 20-year-old Park Sang-young in men's epee individual.
Chinese women's epee team failed to defend their title, which gave Romania its second Olympic title in women's fencing since 1996. Lei Sheng, China's first male foil Olympic champion, was eliminated in the round of 32.
The Rio Olympic Fencing Center also witnessed a milestone for African fencers. Tunisia's Ines Boubakri became the first woman from Africa to win an Olympic medal in fencing after she defeated Aida Shanaeva of Russia in the bronze match of women's foil individual.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when the head strikes or is stuck by an
object. The head does not have to experience an external blow for the brain to
be injured. Brain damage can occur when the head is pushed strongly against the
skull White

Concussion is a
mild form of TBI from which recovery often occurs without long term effects
unless a person experiences multiple concussions. Repeated brain injuries have a
cumulative effect resulting in more severe and more prolonged post-concussion
symptoms. A very serious and dangerous condition or even death can occur if a
second concussion is suffered while symptoms from a previous concussion still
persist. This condition is called second-impact syndrome
(SIS).
Sports-Related Concussions Causes and Frequency
According
to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about
300 White
Sox Melky Cabrera Jersey ,000 people experience concussions each year from
sports injuries. Most sports-related concussions come from contact sports,
especially
football White
Sox Matt Davidson Jersey , boxing,
hockey White
Sox Luke Appling Jersey , and martial arts. Other major causes of a large
number of sports-related concussions are falls or collisions in sports such as
skiing,
bicycling White
Sox Luis Aparicio Jersey , horseback riding,
basketball White
Sox Lucas Giolito Jersey , and soccer. In soccer an additional risk for
concussions is heading the ball.
The most likely population to suffer
concussions due to sports activities are males between the ages of 16 and 25.
Within this group, the risk is highest at the high school level. About 25
percent of the
300 White Sox
Jose Abreu Jersey ,000 sports-related concussions reported each year are
suffered by high school students playing contact sports. At the college level,
over one third of football players has suffered a concussion and about 20
percent have had multiple concussions.
Dangers of Multiple
Concussions
Second-impact syndrome
(SIS) White
Sox Joe Crede Jersey , which is a concussion that occurs while the victim
is still recovering from and earlier concussion, has resulted in at least 26
deaths in the past 20 years since this condition was first characterized. Most
of these victims were in high school.
While most cases of SIS and
multiple concussions do not cause
death White
Sox Jeff Keppinger Jersey , the neuropsychological brain damage they cause
is significant. Many studies have shown that athletes who have suffered multiple
concussions are more likely to have prolonged learning difficulties and perform
more poorly on neuropsychological tests compared to people who have had one
concussion or no concussions. Some the well-documented neuropsychological
impairments in athletes who have had multiple concussions are:
* Reduced
speed in processing new information
* Problem solving and planning
difficulties
* Increased number of headaches
* Concentration
difficulties
* Memory impairments
* Behavioral problems
Why
Athletes Suffer Multiple Concussions
Factors that contribute to why
athletes suffer multiple concussions are related to the ability to accurately
assess severity and recovery from symptoms. For example, there are several
different scales for rating severity at the time of the concussion but there is
general lack of agreement on which to use. There is also lack of agreement on
what amount of time should pass before athletes can safely
return. Cheap Air
