Is a Pneumatic Jewelry Engraver Worth It for Small Workshops? | Forum

I’ve been doing hand engraving on silver rings and pendants for a while, but recently I started looking into pneumatic jewelry engravers. A local jeweler let me test one for a few minutes, and I was surprised by how much easier fine lines and shading felt compared to traditional push gravers.

What caught my attention most was the control. Even on curved surfaces, the cuts looked cleaner and more consistent. I can see why many professionals use pneumatic systems for lettering, stone setting details, and background textures. At the same time, the machines aren’t exactly cheap, especially once you add compressors and different handpieces.

For people who already own one, how long did it take to get comfortable with it? Did it noticeably improve your workflow or engraving quality? I’m mainly working on custom jewelry pieces in small batches, so I’m wondering if the investment makes sense for a smaller workshop rather than a large production studio.

Would love to hear real experiences before I decide.
