On top of success in terms of participant count, the amount of
cheap RuneScape gold contributors is soaring. Jagex says that RuneScape reached a record high of 1.1 million subscribers between the two versions of the game. As an example, World of Warcraft has approximately 1.7 million subscribers according to estimates (Blizzard stopped supplying data on current subscribers in 2015). Ultima Online, that released in 1997 and became the very first MMORPG to reach 100,000 subscribers, is approaching its last minutes. MMORPGs that released in the same timeframe as RuneScape, like The Coming and EverQuest, still exist. But none have been able to keep the level of popularity enjoyed by the seemingly undying franchise of Jagex.
It's uncertain how much longer RuneScape will keep going, but its popularity shows no sign of ending. Mansell appears right when he states that 2020 is shaping up to be the year for the game and Jagex. As other MMORPGs which were popular continue to meet their demise, RuneScape has shown an ability to grow and accommodate even when all of the cards have been stacked against it. RuneScape's popularity may seem a mystery to some, but the popularity of WoW Classic and RuneScape says something about older RPGs: they have a substance that more modern games lack.
2019'was a year' for Jagex and RuneScape
RuneScape has topped 1.1 million paying subscribers around its RuneScape and Old School RuneScape franchises. In a media statement, developer Jagex also verified that Old School Runescape had a"spike in popularity" with everyday active users reaching their greatest level ever since the title released six years ago, but didn't quantify the achievement.
Other accomplishments in 2019 included Old School RuneScape's cellular version Best Mobile Game at the Grow Stars Awards, in Addition to securing a BAFTA for EE Mobile Game of the Year, and hitting on
