I believe the way it works in the US is that you are not allowed to contribute directly to politicians, so firms interested in lobbying tend to make campaign donations rather (correct me if I'm wrong, though). Per state but rather per constituency, politicians aren't chosen in the united kingdom. Some constituencies are extremely large (in rural Scotland) or really small (central London).
